Delve into the Coventry accent
Saturday 9th November 2019
Delve into the Coventry accent, in Coventry Archives this Saturday | 11.00am – 12.00pm. Dr. Christopher Strelluf of the University of Warwick uses the treasure trove of old sound recordings in the Coventry Archives to show what English in Coventry was like for people born in the community in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This includes words, sounds, and grammatical features that make the “Coventry Accent” unique, and provide a foundation for English spoken in Coventry today. En route to describing English in Coventry, Dr. Strelluf will introduce methods and principles of linguistic analysis, revealing some of the ways linguists study language to reveal its fascinating complexities. Hollywood comes to Stoke Aldermoor
Friday 18th October 2019   to   Friday 18th October 2019
“The Italian Job” Unveiling of the Commemorative Plaque. On Friday 18th October we plan to erect and unveil a commemorative plaque to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the making of the film ‘The Italian Job’. A scene from iconic film was actually filmed in the Stoke Aldermoor area of Coventry. In the film there was a car chase involving that great British car the ‘Mini’. During the chase there was a scene where the vehicles were driven through a sewer pipe. This part of the film was actually filmed in Stoke Aldermoor on the park next to The Lindfield. To film this scene, the crew lowered the mini cars into the sewer by crane. The person driving the crane was a local driver who still lives in Stoke Aldermoor. We want to raise awareness of the making of this iconic film and its significance to the local area. We feel that erecting a commemorative plaque will not only increase local peoples’ awareness of this piece of history, but it will also attract visitors from all over the country. On the day of the unveiling we have arranged for the Oscar winning film producer, Michael Deeley, who has also produced films such as ‘The Deer Hunter’ and ‘Blade Runner’, to come to Coventry to unveil the plaque. Also accompanying him will be David Salamone who drove the Red mini in the film The Italian job. Also at the event will be Remy julienne In 1958 Frenchman Remy Julienne became the French Motorcross Champion. In his homeland his driving skills were recognised as some of the best and his charismatic driving led him to become France's most respected stunt driver. Eventually he set up his own stunt driving company 'Remy Julienne L'Equipe', a self contained team of highly skilled drivers and mechanics. His break onto the international stage came when he was asked to complete the stunt work on The Italian Job. Since then Remy Julienne L'Equipe hasn't looked back. Half a dozen Bond films and other similar action movies have benefited from his stunt work and the impressive portfolio continues to grow. Schedule for the event: 18th October 2019 It's a Friday, the last day at school locally for the children. This is a small springboard event we are holding for the City of Culture 2021. We are organising mini clubs to drive through surface laid tunnels along the original route. (parallel with the Linfield). The response to this has been fantastic. Hollywood is coming to Stoke Aldermoor (who would have thought it). Stoke Aldermoor will be a mecca for film buffs and mini enthusiasts around the world. Thank you in advance Regards Kevin Conway
The Mystery of the St Mary's Hall Tapestry - Pulling the Threads Together
Friday 27th September 2019
The tapestry, woven in c.1500, is the jewel of Coventry's heritage and is of national, even international significance. Located on the the north wall of Coventry's magnificent medieval guildhall, it is the oldest tapestry in the country still hanging in the place for which it was designed and woven. Yet much about the tapestry is unknown or subject to interpretation. Who are the figures surrounding the central figures of Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou? Where was the tapestry woven? Who might have commissioned it? And what was the overall purpose? For the first time all the acknowledged experts from different specialisms will gather in front of this magnificent tapestry to pull the different threads together and try to reveal its mysteries. Join David Starkey, Maria Hayward, Jonathan Foyle, Joanna Laynsmith, Kate Giles, Sean Cunningham and Fred Hepburn as they develop their verdicts in what promises to be a fascinating and potentially dramatic reveal of this overlooked masterpiece.

Coventry Mysteries Festival
Friday 23rd May 2014   to   Monday 26th May 2014
Hello, I'm the joint director of this year's Coventry Mysteries Festival, which runs from 23rd May to 26th May 2014. There is the international pavement 'Picasso', the thread installation artist Debbie Smyth, rambunctious pied piper bands playing in the city centre and mini raves where you can party on the dance floor with your kids. There is the international theatre company Reckless Sleepers performing an intimate show for 39 people in a 670 year old church, LAStheatre opening the doors to the Institute of Impossibility at Draper's Hall and award winning Engineer Theatre Collective present their heart rendering show Missing. As a Mum to a very energetic 22 month old boy I was very keen to ensure there were lots of fun and family friendly activities - we have a range of events for the family to share and the family leaflet is attached. For the climax to our festival we are building a 1.5km larger than life Domino run, a unique action sculpture using 4500 concrete blocks. Volunteers will work together in teams to create a huge line of dominoes that will weave their way from Fords Hospital, leaping from car parks and running through historic buildings and everyday parts of the city ending at the Cathedral Ruins. And we need 250 volunteers to make this happen. Whether you are a Domino daredevil or just like watching the world pass by we want to hear from you. No specific experience is necessary - other than a positive, playful attitude. You can join as a group, a family or an individual. You can be 8 or 108 years old. (Under 16s need to be accompanied by an adult) Using light weight breeze blocks, volunteers will work together to build the Domino Run throughout the day. We will need you from 10am - 5pm on Monday 26th May 2014 The topple is at 3pm! Every volunteer who takes part will receive a limited edition t-shirt as a keepsake of the event to say you were there. TO GET INVOLVED, please email Zoe Stokes at or call 07535 153 123 But that is just some of many highlights - please see the full line up at We hope there is something for everyone to enjoy on a day out and it's a festival all communities can share. If possible, please could you share this email with your friends and members? We have hard copies available of the brochure and posters and can send you some if you would like - let me know if this is of interest, and the best contact details, and we will get them to you quickly. Please let me know if you have any questions. Best wishes and thank you for your help, Elgiva Joint Festival Director Coventry Mysteries Festival
