I could not find a topic on this so there it goes. I know it is not an old building as buildings go, but the amount of work that went into building it was vast. I am trying to find out about the three figures that stand tall above the main doorway. Can any one tell me who they were ? Don't tell me it's the three wise men. Working for our council - ha ha ha. Here are a few more bits of art. All photo's taken on St.Mary's Street. Thumbs up
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

I did see a picture somewhere with regards to a raised walk way from the rear of the Council House to St. Mary's. It must have been 40 feet in the air. And something to do with a wall that MAY have been part of the Castle. I don't have this photo but do recall it being in a newspaper that I gave back to a lady that lent it to me. Wave
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Coventry was part of the diocese of Lichfield until 1918.

You have just brought my notice to the Council House Dutchman, via your link. Not a lot has been mentioned about this lovely 100 year old building. I sincerely hope there are no dire plans for it in the future. Wave

I knew this was in my file but had trouble locating it. Quality is not great as it is from the Coventry Graphic in December 1915. It shows the building of the Council House on the Hay Lane corner. Hopefully you can read the text underneath the image.

The Coventry Graphic were fiercely critical of the new Council House...

That's a shame then, because I always thought it looked a rather grand building and I still do. There is not many of them left. Wave

Hi Mattb, and welcome to the forum. Though the figure is not very clear, this picture may interest you from the Coventry Herald 1915 when the building was nearly finished and the scaffolding removed. I don't think I have seen a close up of the figure or what it is but no doubt one of our forum members can come up with something. Maybe one of our photographer members could take a zoom lens to get a better picture.

I thought it a perfectly clear day to get a good or clearer photograph of the statuette.
