It really shows how well loved the philanthropist David Spencer was, that a tree was planted and a plaque made 40 years after Mr Spencer had passed away.

Who remembers Billie Whitelaw? I first, knowingly, became aware of her from her screen appearances, but her presence in my life began to grow and grow from 1950 onwards. The guy I shared a bed space with at RAF Innsworth and who came from Bradford always boasted that his claim to fame was that he had slept with Billie Whitelaw! Which indeed was true. When her family moved to Bradford from Coventry they lived next door and during air raids he and her were put in the same bed! I next began to hear more of her from people I later worked with at GEC Telephone Works. where had her father before their move to Bradford. Next I saw an article on the Internet about Stoke National School, in which I was mentioned, and discovered that she had been in the same class as me in 1935. So being moved to find out more I read her autobiography, "Billie Whitelaw, Who he?". Discovered that not only was she born in the next street but her best friend was also a friend of mine, whose father worked for my father at the Humber; that we were both at the same performance of "Dick Whittington", the very last panto at the old Coventry Hippodrome, before it was pulled down, what's more we were both turned on to the theatre by the performance; she going on to be a star, while I languished as an amateur for 65 years. Where did I go wrong?

Very sad to hear of the passing of Jim Twyneham. For many years the voice of Coventry City FC on match days. In the 1970's Jim was also King of the Turntables when he fronted the brilliant Silk Disco, without question the finest disco in Coventry for many years. Jim was a true Coventrian who will be sadly missed by many people. RIP Jim.
On 6th Jul 2017 7:15am, Midland Red said: Very sad indeed Sad - spent many Sunday lunchtimes in his company in the Styvechale Arms in the mid-70s RIP Jim
On 11th Jul 2017 2:58pm, MisterD-Di said: Absolutely right. Jim Twyneham was certainly a larger-than-life figure in Coventry for many years. I first encountered him at the wonderful Silk Disco at the Plough on London Road around 1969-70, which operated on Friday and Sunday nights as I recall. You paid your admission and got 'SILK' stamped on your hand in black ink. It was very well supported but sadly ceased around 1972 and moved to the Humber Hotel where it was known as 'Arthur's'. (The Humber was then run by Harold Powell, who encouraged all sorts of activities at the pub. The room where Arthur's played also doubled up as a meeting room for football leagues and the referees' association for many years.) As you say, he was the announcer at Highfield Road and later the Ricoh for many years, a job for which he was perfect given his distinctive deep voice. I seem to recall that he was eventually badly treated by the club and ceased to do the job. No surprise there, I guess. I believe he was also match announcer for the big matches at Wembley for some years too, as well as presenting shows on local radio. I also encountered Jim a few times in his professional capacity when I worked for the council. He worked for the Vehicle Licensing Office in Greyfriars Lane for many years and whenever we needed any information he would provide it, along with a chat about the City, of course. A true gentleman, he will be sadly missed.

A long overdue local addition to our Famous Coventrians has been made today - artist, George Wagstaffe. Many of you won't be familiar with the name, but you might recognise some of his work which has graced the city centre for many years - particularly 'Naiad', the lady who used to sit in a pond in the council office courtyard in Earl Street, opposite the council house (and later in Lady Herbert's garden, see photo below). This sculpture was his first significant commission, and it won him the prestigious ICA Young Contemporaries award. He also created 'Phoenix' in Hertford Street, which can be seen on this Coventry Society page about it. George has received almost no proper local recognition for his work, and currently Naiad is hidden away, awaiting restoration and a suitable new location after being badly stored for several years. I hope that, with Coventry's new culture status, these things are rightly remedied.

Saddened to read this morning that the well-known and well-respected Coventry figure, Alan Hartley, passed away on Christmas Day at the age of 93 RIP Alan
On 9th Jan 2018 2:55pm, Derrickarthur said: Alan was a lovely man. A regular at quiz night at the RAFA Club in Lythalls Lane until the last year or so. We will raise a glass to him at tonight's quiz.
On 9th Jan 2018 4:06pm, Ronald34 said: I agree entirely that Alan was a lovely man. I loved his letters to the Telegraph expressing views that many of his age group, including myself, although just a little younger! He had a pair of soccer boots which he took to many football gatherings, highly polished just like himself. I told him they were rugger boots and not soccer boots and we agreed to disagree! He also had a football signed by many goalkeepers like himself. RIP ALAN
