On 12th Feb 2015 10:21am, Norman Conquest said: I remember the Gas Showroom well but more important to me was the shop at the rear of the showrooms that supplied all sorts of camping, walking gear etc. Often bought stuff from them. I recall that one of the staff was called Barrel by his workmates. I was never sure if that was his real name or a rather cruel reference to his rather rotund figure. Does anyone remember that shop? Totally forgotten its name.
Lynes if I recall correctly

Thanks for replies. Yes you are right, it was Lynes. I used to do a bit of walking in those days, Lake District, Dartmoor, those sort of places. Always bought my kit from there.

On 30th Oct 2013 6:57pm, flapdoodle said: The AXA building is going to be converted to student flats. I don't mind the building, but it's bizarrely located - doesn't seem to be 'anywhere' sort of tucked away behind other things. Doesn't this mean that whole area is now nothing but student flats? I think most of the offices around Corporation Street are being converted.
That's the original post in this thread - here's a current view of the site:

Dutchman, the building above looks as though it is farther down Corporation Street than the Gas Showooms, is the bottom right hand corner Bishop Street? For there was nothing between Bishop Street and the Gas Showrooms as I knew it. Lynes camping shop was on the right in a small lane making the Gas Showrooms front look like Owen Owen front with traffic on either side. There were a couple of interesting photo's on post 21, one a shot of early Broadgate and one of the Power Station. I would place both in the very early 30's or before, that's got me thinking.

There was always a big gap between the gas showroom and the corner of Bishop Street:

Corporation Street pre '65 as Hillman House has not gone up yet. The 'Belgrade' fountain - with lots of grass!

The picture of the fountain on Corporation Street was taken by my father in law between 1959-1962. He was a prolific photographer during those years. Some of his other pictures can be seen in my gallery. He focused mainly on day to day life, the building of the cathedral, and the city centre.
