Hi Annewiggy & Wearethemods, Thank you both for your posts. Talk about me not being able to see the wood for the trees, I'm not related to the people in the photograph so I thought F.W. Major was some sort of rank and M.M. ORR some sort of medal/ citation. I think you're right - they do look like names (the words also seem to be in two columns beneath each person). I looked on ancestry for potential leads - and found a marriage between Margaret M. Major and William H. Orr in 1939 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Therefore (if it's the right person) I'm imagining that the lady and gentleman in the photograph may be father and daughter. Thanks for your help and a fresh pair of eyes Thumbs up Luke. Smile

You're spot on, Luke Margaret M Major, born 1917 in Shropshire, was the daughter of Frederick William Major Thumbs up and Lilian Rosa Robbins, who married in 1908 in Shropshire

Brilliant Anne! Do we know where about it was? Says just over the railway bridge so I'm thinking somewhere on Warwick Road? That's a very early Coventry photo then Big grin Edited by member, 9th Aug 2017 4:06 pm

Just found this illustration from that event Anne - the arch looks different unless there's some poetic licence going on? That could be the Railway Hotel in the distance to the left? Edited by member, 9th Aug 2017 4:33 pm

Yes Neil it was Warwick Road. There were thousands of people round the station and goods yards. The stands in the picture must have been for the children and the dignitaries. V & A went on towards Stivichall Gate to the end if the grove and to Stivichall Park which had a triumphal arch decorated with evergreens and flowers.
