I had a dad who encouraged his kids to try anything. Big grin On the downside I have a memory so poor that it makes goldfish send me pitying looks.

So I spent a large chunk of the last week trying to fit pictures of St Mary's Hall to locations but a couple refused to fit the plans. One of them magically dropped into place when I realised that I'd been looking at it upside down from the start.... Roll eyes

Well I think I am getting old. 58 years ago my wife and I decided to tie the knot, it's still tied. Strange as it may seem our parents had lived in the same village for over half a century when they were young. My father had played football for the local team and my wife’s father had stood and watched him as a boy win a cup. Ten years later my wife's father played with the same team and won a cup, and my father watched and cheered from the touchline. But over the war years everyone moved, until this day 58 years ago, when our fathers got to church and lo and behold they met again, a score of years or so between and no one realised until that day the story unfolded. All my life things like that happened.

When you go to the library, look at the biography's index to see if you're there.

As Peter O'Toole said, the only exercise I take is walking behind the coffins of friends who took exercise. As Richard Harris, dying, was taken out of the Savoy to an ambulance, he shouted to the diners, “It was the food. It was the food”.

I remember when there were no TV's and no electricity, and gas lamps with mantles! How’s that?

As recently as the 1990s, a friend was considering buying his first house up the road from his mother's hosue in Earlsdon (Stanley Road). Those houses were all built around 1890. He sought my advice on "getting it wired". I said "you mean REwired?". "No", he replied, "I mean wired. An old lady has lived there all her life and there is no electricity in the house!". Oh my

pixrobin. Yes, brill, I liked it, I know the feeling. Yes, I went to Rome, and all the sights were named after Coventry cinemas. At my age travel broadens the behind.

Yes, old age is when you look forward, to look at the past.

I'm looking forwards to technology to recreate the past. Does that make me middle aged or cross eyed?

Helen F, Neither - just the loss of the real past that technology will never be able to create. Historians get a lot wrong.

I regret the passing of some things but overall I wouldn't really want to swap the past with the present. Despite not being rich, I enjoy a level of comfort and exciting things that my ancestors couldn't imagine, let alone attain. Even kings and queens couldn't buy most of what we in the 21st century take for granted. eg I've read some of those very popular Mystery Plays that Royalty travelled for days to see. Boring! Give me a Pixar movie any day. Life is much safer, cleaner and with much more freedom. It's that last one I most appreciate.
