I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post/reply in but I'm new here (living in Ontario, Canada) and I found this forum by researching my family history - my great grandfather is Herbert William Chattaway (1854-1940) of Coventry. I found his name here so I thought I would add to it. He was married to Sarah Lizzie Sutherland and my grandmother, their daughter Amy Margarette (born 1898) emigrated to Canada in 1925.
While sorting through old family photos researching my grandparents and great-grandparent I've come across an assortment of old newspaper clippings (Midland Daily Telegraph) from the late 20's/early 30's. They are stories of H.W. Chattaway making restoration work to Christ Church spire and Holy Trinity and social news.
One clipping has a photo of him at 78 years of age climbing Christ Church spire and another of him outside King Henry VIII School of which he was the architect. If someone wants me to scan these photos or if they would be of interest for your archive I will post them in a few days time.
Thank you for this format allowing me to learn more of where my family is from.
Kind regards,
Kurt |

In his younger days William Herbert Chattaway was a sportsman. In fact he was Secretary of Coventry Wanderers Football Club who were formed in Coventry in 1869. They initially played in Cheylesmore district before moving to a pitch in Bull Field, Spon End district.
The Wanderers have the distinction of being the first team to play under association rules football in Coventry, some 14 years prior to the formation of Coventry City F.C. (then named Singer Football Club taking their name from the Singer bicycle factory in Alma Street, Hillfields).
Herbert features in my book: The Vocalist - History of Singer Football Club 1883 - 1898 which includes a photograph of him. There is a chapter in my book which explains how Coventry Wanderers were formed, who was involved, details of early matches and information on most of the players.
I have census details and other documents relating to Herbert which I would gladly provide copies. I would also like to send Kurt a complimentary copy of my book.
How can I get in touch ?

I will assist him in completing his family tree and send him copies of research documents I have relating to Herbert William Chattaway, along with a complimentary copy of my book, in which he features. This will take some time and I have promised to keep him informed of my progress. I also hope to find out where WHC is buried.
Thank you to those who helped me make contact with Kurt. |

Herbert Chattaway was also a famous architect in Coventry all those years ago.
It's very pleasing when you are able to help people out with their family history and makes the painstaking research worthwhile.
Thanks to everyone who helped me make contact with Kurt.
Cheers
