Here is another photo mystery for you to work out, Hill Street? I like the character of little stone built building in the background. Can't quite make out what the shop sign is saying though?

The stone building appears to be at an angle to the main road as also are the buildings in the distance which suggests a road junction of some sort? Most odd! Mid 1930s I would say and on a bus route rather than a tram route which rules out a lot of streets.

I must say, it does very much have a "Far Gosford"-ish look about it, especially if you look at this Google Maps street view.... Far Gosford Street on Google The level of the horizon in the background also looks right, but the shop frontages have been altered so much over the last 100 years that it's difficult to properly compare them to that photo. "The spirit of Coventry" - On the original photograph, is it possible to enlarge and scan the shop names to see if we can maybe look them up in some directory?

It appears to be a bus route rather than a tram route which would rule out Far Gosford Street or Bishop Street. I'm leaning towards Ball Hill, Radford or Coundon Road as possible locations.

I think you're right actually dutchman, there are no signs of tramlines. Apart from that though it really does look very similar to FGS! The best help I can offer in this case then is direction.... the shadow on the car opposite is quite steep, suggesting near to mid-day - so I would reckon that we're looking roughly westwards going down the hill.... just like FGS!!!

Another thing that sticks out is the wide pavement on the nearside (where the couple are walking towards the camera.) Has the pavement outside the Hand in Heart always been wide?

Yes but the buildings opposite were completely different to the ones in the picture.

I have noticed that there is a single decker bus on the far left of the photo and behind Herbert's head are Shell petrol pumps? Hmmm interesting

I may be seeing things (won't be the first time!) but that canopy looks like it could have the name "Twinnings"? Looks like it may start "Tw" with a possible "double letter" in the middle and ending with a "tailed" letter? Ok, I'm seeing things!! Lol

I think the shop just right of centre is "Godiva Supplies" and the sign on the stone building behind it "Coleman & Sons".

Really not Hill Street. Went to school there in the 60's and at the bottom of Hill Streets is Bonds Hospital, can't see it on the photo. And I was always led to believe by my uncle who grew up just off Hill Street that it was all houses around there.

That funny stone building looks like the remains of the city wall that you can see from the ring road near to Machine Mart. According to Google maps just opposite this, where Wickes is, was a 'Radford Road'. Did this down and join up with Lamb street near where Chapel Lane is? I don't have a clue what that area was like before the war or before they built the ring road. Maybe Dutchman has some memories/photos. Aside from that, my initial thought was FGS, but as has been mentioned, there are no tram lines.
