23rd May We have two significant events in Coventry's history that happened "today".... 1957 Pearl Hyde becomes the first female 'Lord' Mayor of Coventry, and the event also becomes the first ever televising of such an event in the world. 1980 The first local radio station, Mercia Sound, opens on 220metres Medium Wave. I wasn't born until 1965, so I don't have any memories of Pearl Hyde, although from what I've read she was an amazing and inspiring person. I do remember tuning in to Mercia Sound though, with the chirpy Gordon Astley, etc. I wonder what our members can add to these events?

On 23rd May 2017 7:42am, Midland Red: From our list of "Famous Coventrians": Hyde, Pearl Marguerite, MBE JP (1904-1963) Enfield-born, leader of women's voluntary work and politician, became the city's first lady Lord Mayor in 1957. Died in a road accident in Scotland. Warwick University article. She also has her own thread on HCF which includes a link to film of her being installed as Lord Mayor Thumbs up

24th May 1940 A Hampden bomber on a training flight developed engine trouble. As it neared Coventry the engine began to fail, and circling at a low height the bomber struck a barrage balloon cable based at Charterhouse Fields. The pilot brought the plane down, exploding on the Coventry & North Warwickshire Cricket Ground on the Binley Road. I wonder if any of our super senior citizens will have anything to add to this?

On 27th May 2017 10:05am, zigzag said: My father, who is now well into his nineties, recalled this event to me many times when I was a child. He remembered it so well due to the fact he lived nearby in Anthony Way at the time.

26th May 1985 Coventry City escape relegation by the skin of their teeth with a remarkable 4-1 victory over Everton in the final match of the season - they had to win all three remaining games to stay in the 1st Division. 26th May 1962 The Forum Cinema in Walsgrave Road closed after over 27 years, showing 'Lover come back' with Doris Day. Now, even I'm old enough to remember that Everton match - I really didn't think we had a chance of staying up that weekend! The Forum Cinema, though, which was very near to where I now live, closed three years before I was invented! I'm sure some members will be able to share memories....?

28th May 1956 saw Ray Hitchcock hit a century for Warwickshire on the second day of their County Championship match at Courtaulds Ground against Kent. His 113, along with 62 from Coventry's own Fred Gardner, was in vain, as rain severely curtailed play on the third day and the match ended tamely in a draw
