MR, thank you, I remember that now. I had loads at one time, some really worn very smooth, but they went into Christmas puddings over the years, and some many times over. Thumbs up

The silver sixpence was a tanner, the silver two shillings was a florin, the one shilling was a bob, two and half shillings was half a crown, Half-penny piece, was a a'penny, twelve pennies a shilling, four farthings a penny. twenty shillings a pound.

When I was in my teens it was the Half Sovereign in Charter Avenue - now it's the Sovereign. I guess they are not keeping up with inflation as a half-sovereign would now be worth at least a tenner. Cheers

I'd heard of some of these names but didn't know what they referred to. My sister collected loads of sixpences just before they vanished and still has them.

Midland Red, It was always a silver tanner that went in Xmas puddings at our house. and under the pillow when you lost a tooth. The tooth fairy left it. There was the 12 times table we used to sing at school. The alphabet was always sung too. Made it easier to remember.
