Thanks for that MR. I have to say that one area that could do with more information is the stretch closest to the Ring Road. I think I know where the wall ran almost until you get to the north wall (which is probably under the Road). But it's not clear from any map I've seen where that wall crossed the north edge of the Post office complex and exactly what angle. The tower would have been under the roadway into the north car park, partly in Tower street if the maps line up with google. If either that road or the one that runs between the ring road and the Post office were dug up, it might be worth looking for the line of the wall.

The problem is when the GPO building was constructed, they levelled the ground by up to 4metres, and this means its unlikely anything will have survived.

Looking at these 'high rises' is it just me who is experiencing this feeling of deja vu?

Not really. You can't compare today with the 1960s, where the high-rise buildings were plagued with problems and considered unappealing to families as it was difficult to let the kids out to play. This failure has led to a poor view of high-rise living in the UK. Couple this with the NIMBYism we suffer (no one wants anything built near them) it's a good use of land, especially for student living. Modern developments don't tend to suffer the social problems that 1960s blocks suffer and tend not to be aimed at families. The chances are these new developments will have onsite staff and security and are aimed at students, who won't mind living in a high rise buildings.

This development, and the one in Hales Street (visible under construction in the Trinity Street and Butcher Row threads), will certainly change the city skyline.

Following the above comment, discussion evolved regarding the "Three Spires" - in order to maintain this thread on-topic, a separate thread relating to "Three Spires" has been created, into which the relevant posts have been transferred Thumbs up

Warrington has the opposite problem. The council doesn't insist on building up and it's eating the farming land away at a terrible rate.
