Ronan O'Rahilly, founder of Radio Caroline in the sixties.
On 23rd Apr 2020 3:51pm, walrus said: Ronan O'Rahilly was one person who really did have a profound effect on popular culture in the UK. I was at the Royal Navy boys training establishment, HMS Ganges, situated on the Shotley peninsular in 1963/4. Radio Caroline started transmitting from just outside the 3 mile limit near Harwich / Felixstowe around Easter of 64. We had a very tall mast and Caroline was clearly visible from it. The reception on our little tranny was superb. We had all the latest records introduced by young trendy DJs, most of whom became household names - Simon Dee, Johnny Walker, Tony Blackburn, Emperor Rosko etc. It certainly brightened up a very tough, disciplined life at Ganges. The BBC and Post Office forced the government to harass the pirates and eventually start up Radios 1 and 2 which at least killed off the Light and Home programmes and broadcast popular music that ordinary people wanted to hear. Well done Ronan, RIP.
