I am deeply saddened to read of the death, at the age of 88, of David Bryant CBE MBE, probably the greatest flat green bowler of all time. Here is an obituary posted on the Bowls England website, showing some of his achievements, both outdoors and indoors, in a long career. RIP DJB.

David Graeber The anthropologist professor who wrote the book Bull Shit Jobs. According to John Maynard Keynes, by 2000 we should all be working a 15 hour week because of technological advances. Yet 36.5 hours per week is still the norm at my place. Graeber listed jobs such as CEOs, PR researchers, actuaries and telemarketers... My preferred own term is non-jobs, which includes "compliance officer", "procurement officer", traffic wardens (or the stupid title "civil enforcement officer" they now like to call themselves). Notice how many of these jobs have the word officer these days, as if to give the post some clout? In reality they are doing nothing useful, nothing to benefit society, but are the result of empire-building, and do at least shorten the dole queue.
