I have a couple of small pencil sketches from the early 1930s by J E (Jim) Kessell who I always believed to have been a well-known local artist I cannot find any information about him and would be grateful to know if anyone out there does have any knowledge Thanks

Evening Midland Red, I don't know whether you have found any details yourself about your artist by now because this is an old post. I believe him to be James Everett Kessell (1915-1978), I don't know much about his birth etc but he had a studio in Eastern Green. J E Kessell He is here (No. 10) discussing Coventry art (I reckon anyway, cos I can't get it to fire up personally). Mr Kessell Discussing Art By the way, the apple site seems great, I have that book 'Hurdy Gurdy Days' I think an excerpt is read out.

Thanks, Foxcote, for the information - I'd given up hope, to be honest, as I hadn't found anything myself nor had there been any response The two small pencil drawings are contained in a tiny autograph book which also contains these speedway rider autographs from 1930, which include two of the greatest riders of all time, in Tom Farndon and Jack Parker *** Here are scans of these two drawings : I wonder what happened to the "Cat Series" Oh my *** Not my opinion, but by general consensus across the speedway world!

I have found out a bit about him. His father was from Maidenhead, born 1890, another James Everett Kessell. In 1911, just before his marriage in the same year, he was boarding at 14 Humber Road, occupation, Coach Painter. J E K junior was born Oct. 1915 and died in 1977. There are some reference to him in the phone books, at various addresses and there was a studio in Church Lane, Eastern Green. One other address in the book for 1957 was 19, Clovelly Road, Walsgrave. As for his artwork, I haven't found reference to his education, so perhaps others can help fill in the gaps.

Smashing little book, expect you are thrilled with the autographs. Well if that was 1930, he would only have been 15 years old then. I suspect we shall find more, it will be good for you as the owner of the autograph book to hear his voice on that apple link and maybe he will speak of his career as well.

Section Leader Brandon Moss, GC, of Coventry Section Leader Brandon Moss, GC, of Coventry Brandon Moss was awarded the George Cross for his "superhuman efforts and utter disregard for personal injury" while serving as a Special Constable with the Coventry Constabulary. He led two rescue attempts on houses which had been destroyed by a high explosive bomb during heavy German air raids on 14 November 1940 in the Coventry Blitz, managing to free three people trapped in the rubble in the first and another person in the second after seven hours of digging through the night. He also recovered four bodies. A fractured gas main, further air raids and a delayed action bomb no more than twenty yards from the scene added to the danger of falling masonry and structural collapse. The citation for his award was published in the London Gazette on 13 December 1940, when he was presented with the George Cross by King George VI at Buckingham Palace. Moss married Vera Watson and had two daughters. He died, aged 90, in Coventry on August 9, 1999. His GC is now on display at the Lord Ashcroft VC Gallery in the Imperial War Museum, London.

I'm a big fan of George Shaw's work. He was a Turner prize finalist in 2011. Spot the scenes in and around Tile Hill: George Shaw's Paintings

Thanks for the above NeilsYard, I think George Shaw's work is fantastic, so simple yet all the detail is in there needed for the scene. Love the 'wood scene' No. 9. Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up

Most of them I would say. You have to look twice to make sure they are paintings. Brilliant Thumbs up
