Thanks for that information McSporrran: So far I've found my ancestors: 1. Up before the Town Council for making dodgy police uniforms 2. Breaking up a fight between his and another tailor's apprentice 3. Getting involved in a dog fight (although he was cleared) 4. A witness in a horse biting incident. 5. Bailing his insolvent brother out on numerous occasions

Evidently the Newspaper Archive has plans to digitise the CET up to 1969. Does anyone know if the FindMyPast version has the same range of dates?

Question

That would be interesting Mcsporran, if they get that far my wedding picture will be in.

I subscribed to the Newspaper Archive, but I wanted access to the 1939 Register, so before I moved across, I asked FMP and received this response: The British Newspaper Archive's search engine is different from Findmypast and some newspapers that are available on The British Newspaper Archive may not be available on Findmypast as Findmypast receives Newspapers at a later date.

The British Library's Newspaper Archive has now put the digitised Coventry Evening Telegraph online up to 1971.

Yes mcsporran it’s great. I have found lots more interesting family things. It is even up to date enough to have our wedding picture in 1969. It’s a great site. Thumbs up

I've had access to the online newspapers through Find My Past for the last few days and found some great photographs albeit some of them very poorly scanned. Has anyone been able to compare the online copy of the old papers (pre war) with the microfiche at the Herbert? Were they better? Are there any paper copies of the old papers? Do you think the Telegraph might have the original photos? For those with access, there are some very nice articles on the history of Coventry with details I've not read before.

Helen, I agree some of the scans are very poor. A lot of the pictures are quite dark. I have come across some that were relevant to a post but you could hardly see them. I would think the originals would be better either as a paper copy or on microfilm. There is a mention of the Telegraph having an archive and they do keep coming up with pictures on their web site. It might be worth getting in touch and asking them but I expect as usual if you want copies you will have to pay. Coventry Telegraph Edited by member, 3rd Dec 2018 7:24 pm

If the cost isn't too steep I would be ok with paying for some of the rarer views. I've already started a letter. Thumbs up

Another great 'new' shot. The large foundations for the Telegraph in 1958. And just as interesting to see Hogarths, the Rex market, Barnby's and Newsome's on Corporation Street in the background. Edited by member, 9th Dec 2020 2:04 pm

Just pinched this from FB… “…yesterday the CoventryLive / Telegraph app had a report on closed pubs that drinkers really miss - the list included the Holyhead and the Greyhound at Sutton Stop and even had a photo of Greyhound staff. Today the report now says those two pubs are popular with drinkers who have reported about ‘pubs they love which are still very much open to customers’” Roll eyes

Telegraph reporting, whether it's geographical, like street names & districts, or factual listings is sometimes unreliable. They haven't got the the staff to do it. An audited current circulation of less than fourteen thousand copies (some reports state much less) is hardly going to pay their tea bill!
