Someone from Coventry who has just become famous worldwide, and rightly so, is the leader of the expedition who devised, I am led to believe, the plan to rescue the boys trapped in the caves in Thailand. The publicity of his and the team's fortitude & endeavours may be short lived to most, but they will never be forgotten by those whose lives were saved. Thumbs up UPDATE Having watched the Midlands News last night which featured an interview with said hero, it transpires it was his idea to sedate all the boys as none could swim and for safety reasons for both the rescuers and the boys they were brought to the surface unconscious. Yes, and on the TV last week someone was being interviewed about making a movie about the whole operation, now that will be most interesting methinks. Smile

Just found a man who I believe is a candidate as a famous Coventrian though born in Wales. He is John Lloyd who was the chief aircraft designer for Armstrong Whitworth. He designed many planes from the 1920's to 1950, including the Siskin, Whitley bomber and the Flying Wing. I believe that he lived at Gibbet Hill at some time.

On 18th Sep 2011 3:10pm, Tricia said: I suspect most members of the forum are too young to remember Reg Dixon, the Coventry comedian. Wink Reg was born in Coventry and always remembered his roots. I recall seeing him at the Hippodrome (I think in pantomime). He also used to be on the radio and I remember seeing him on television wearing a stripped jacket and a trilby hat, he always started his act with his catch-phrase "I'm poorly, proper poorly".He wrote his signature tune 'Confidentially' himself and it was a hit record. But the song I remember him singing most was Send Me To Coventry. If my memory serves me right the words were. Send me to Coventry, my home town, Send me where the spires one, two three, Seem to ring a welcome home to me, Send me Coventry, I don't care, There's a lady there to meet you named Godiva, Back in my home town. Thumbs up Wave
Tricia, not too young. I remember Reg Dixon and his appearances at the Hippodrome (Coventry Theatre)

If you go onto Youtube and type in Reg Dixon there's a 6 minute clip of Reg Dixon being interviewed and towards the end of the clip he sings Send me to Coventry.
