It must be about then, although there's a window of time where the buildings still standing on the left were isolated after the ones in between were demolished, and the final demolition. The distant one on the left was the same one you can just see in the Phipson 1908 picture that Anne posted. Even by that point it had lost the street frontage. So later than 1897 but before 1912.

I wonder if it is the parade of the Barnum and Bailey greatest show on earth, that came to Coventry in October 1898. The show was to be on the Agricultural Show Ground on the Birmingham Road (I have yet to find out where that was, it may be the same place that Buffalo Bill had his show which was where the Alvis site was). The parade was to go through the town including Earl Street. The parade featured a team of 40 horses. Sorry forget that, just read another article that says the parade was cancelled because it rained !! Nothing changes. Edited by member, 12th Mar 2018 5:02 pm

Don't know if anyone has noticed but the space below the listed Architect's offices and the courtyard beyond have been blocked off

Now that is an outstanding picture Prof and one I've never seen before. It shows the street from the east, looking towards the west, while still being demolished to make way for the Council House. The building just the right is the same as the one to the right of this one. Edited by member, 23rd Sep 2018 3:14 pm

Over the years stuff that has been posted has vanished, so it's very possible that it's been posted and gone before I ever started looking. I've seen several photos looking east across this area but none looking west. Ironically I've seen several early sketches/paintings looking west but none looking east. It's almost as if the artists and photographers did it to annoy me. Lol

Yes Helen - it's so fascinating when something pops up that covers an area we've not seen before though isn't it. As an aside the disappearing images issue should be resolved going forward as Rob is letting us (and I know many posts came from me!) use the Forum server to store our own images now to be preserved forever for posterity! Big grin

Thanks Prof, Anne pointed me to that book. It has two E A Phipson images of interest. The other is a yard on Gosford Street.

A doctor took a furnished apartment at a tradesman's establishment in Earl Street, and commenced business in a very humble way, but business progressed - soon he had a good sized practice. But he liked plum pie, He bought a dozen plums, and desired the landlady to make him a pie, but after dinner he complained there were only eleven stones, and told the landlady to take more care in the future. Next week he again bought a dozen plums and asked for a pie. The landlady, stung by his remark, with her assistants ate half of the plums but put the stones with the remainder of the fruit into the pie, and asked if he had enjoyed the pie. He replied that he had, for counting the stones he found that all the stones were there.
