Highbury Ladies Physical Culture Club

I am looking for information about a group called Highbury Ladies Physical Culture Club which was active around 1920. I have established that it was a Coventry group. I am hoping that someone can suggest a reason for the choice of name. Is there Coventry link?

Hi Greyland. Looking through the on line newspaper site there are references to Highbury School and a junior football team called Highbury Athletic in Coventry newspapers. Unfortunately I cannot find out any more about where Highbury School was but there could be a connection.

There is a very large property in Meriden on the Berkswell road called Highbury House if that's any help

The more I look at this, the more I am drawn to Highbury Place, Abbotts Lane In 1914, the instructress of the Highbury club is named in the Coventry Evening Telegraph as Mrs J A Noble - to me, that suggests she was the wife of Mr J A Noble, as that's how things were in those days! A quick look at the 1911 census shows a Noble family, headed by John Alfred (accountant at Corporation Gas Works), living a 2 Highbury Place, Abbotts Lane Is this a lead, I wonder (at least to where the name may have come from)? PS In 1917 Mr J A Noble was treasurer of the Coventry Ladies Physical Culture Association - well, as an accountant, he would be, wouldn't he?

I've read through many newspaper reports, but none give any sort of clue to where the club was based - there are details of competition results, event appearances, etc. but nothing to give any firm information about the club, other than the Highbury name coincidence I reported earlier Highbury School is mentioned, as is Highbury Athletic FC Incidentally, the Nobles appear to have been very active in a number of groups and associations in Coventry

My thanks to everyone who responded to my query. The group would need a sizeable room to practise their routines, which leads me to think that Highbury School, wherever it was, may have been their headquarters. On the other hand, the involvement of the Noble family, who happened to live at Highbury place, must be a possibility for the source of the club's name.

Bit of a thread revival but whilst looking for something else I noticed Highbury Place located on this 1954 map - it was on Abbotts Lane here as per Deano's photo - not sure what happened to it though? Edited by member, 5th Jul 2018 9:17 pm

Neil, in 1968 there is a wedding picture of a marriage of someone living in Highbury Place but in 1970 there is an article about looking for someone whose relative is ill but it says the last known address 3 Highbury Place is demolished so went between 68 and 70 if that is any help.

Thanks again Anne - just wonder why it was demolished - it wasn't in the way of the Ring Road?

Sorry Heathite but the article dated October 1970 says they are looking for Alfred Walton of 3 Highbury Place, that is the only address they have for him which has been demolished. His brother was seriously ill.

Thank you for that Anne. Alfred WALTON is actually on the listing for the 1972 Coventry directory, are the records not updated?
