The temporary Coventry Station building, as seen here circa 1960-1962? (the Jag here standing in front of it is an absolute beauty!).

Don't think I've seen this one before, looking towards the old station from the side of The Railway Hotel/Rocket.

The new footbridge is taking shape. I hope it looks better when it is finished. The station feels like a building site at the moment. Not helped by the lack of passengers.

Trains between Nuneaton and Leamington resume on Monday 26th April with a train every two hours (timetable). A bus will continue to operate on the alternate hours.

It was a Class 8F 2-8-0 tender loco which over-ran and came down the embankment.
My friend Brian Burrows has given me permission to show this photograph he took on 17 Dec 1962 Oh my

That's a terrific shot Cliff! Many thanks to Brian. Any idea whereabouts exactly that was in relation to today?

According to the Telegraph report, the locomotive had hauled 18 wagons from Hawkesbury to the sidings at Coundon Road Wharf, when it skidded and went through the stop-block. It came to rest close to the River Sherborne, alongside Coventry Corporation Water Depot. It looks like it was close to here in today’s money Oh my

The picture is the north end of the viaduct (roughly this view). Trains into Coundon Road sidings had to stop on the viaduct and reverse into the sidings (diagram) so the accident could only have happened whilst shunting in the yard.

Nice one Peter - don't think I've ever even been down where that new estate is now. Thanks for confirming.

I think my photo with the red car is virtually at the same point as Peter’s but nearer to the viaduct. You’ll see the car place Paint Junky Garage on Google Maps Thumbs up

Thanks Cliff and Peter though looking at old Maps the siding in to Coundon Road Goods Yard was north of Holyhead Road so I can't see how he came to come off the line there?

Coming from Hawkesbury, the train would have drawn up past the wharf, to reverse in Thumbs up

The sidings were north of Holyhead road, but the "headshunt" (a line to shunt the sidings without blocking the main lines) ran across Holyhead Road to the end of the viaduct. The span for the third track with its newer brickwork is still in place. You can see the headshunt on Old-maps.co.uk.

I'm loving this discussion, even though the incident was sad. Thank you all. Headshunts are often missed on models. The line from Coventry to Nuneaton, although described as secondary, carried a lot of traffic, so avoiding shunt onto running line scenarios was needed. End of branch lines, often had mainline shunting, but the rules were so involved. The shunt loco had to be in possession of an area shunt tablet, issued by the area controlling box, which locked all of the access signals, the rules for one engine in steam applied. The Foleshill line was just too busy for that. Please carry on, thank you.
