There was also a car rental business on the same site. It was called "Swan Self-Drive"! ![]() |

Messrs Atkinsons Limited sold it in 1923 to Goodwin Foster Brown and it became the flour mill. I don't know how large it was or if it extended as far as White Street and to where the garage was. The description of the building says "Other buildings include well, stabling, coach houses, van sheds and large ale stores". Is it possible that these buildings were on the corner of Wheatley Street and White Street.

The 1912-13 Spennells Directory shows that the buildings on the two corners of White Street at its junction with Wheatley Street were occupied by James Wetton (plumber) and Harry Wetton (chemist) at no.27 and (across Wheatley Street) Wm. J. Pickup MD at "Swanswell" - next towards Cox Street was W.A. Sykes, harness maker, at Leipzig House, no.29

Thanks for that. I've consulted my father a bit more and he tells me the garage was in fact built on the site of a Doctor's house
So there's the link to the doctor's house ![]() |

I'm fairly sure that's a view from the corner of Wheatley Street and Cox Street Anne and also that the building survived (as a warehouse) until it was replaced with the bus garage in 1985:
