Do you happen to know how much damage was caused in the area of Clay Lane during the blitz ? Does anyone know if the coachbuilders Cross & Ellis were also in Clay Lane ? Problem is, not many people who were around in those days are with us now. |

This dates back to the 30's outside the Priory Street works where this photo was taken, it looks like a Triumph 'Gloria' as the poster on the window reads - "Triumph Gloria wins Monte Carlo Rally, light car class, best performance of any British car".
This is actually the 1934 Monte Carlo class winning car (3rd overall):
www.pre-1940triumphmotorclub.org/gloria.html
It was driven by Donald Healey, who had survived the previous rally when his Triumph was demolished by a train he was trying to beat to a level crossing!
(Mouse over the picture on the link to see that it survives).

How ironic when WW1 was only around the corner:

"Siegfried Bettmann - Triumphs founder died at his home "Elm Bank", Stoke Park" - apparently.
Anyone know where Siegfried was buried?
I think you will find, NeilsYard, that Siegfried Bettmann was buried in Stoke St Michael's Churchyard and I also think that, though a Jew, he attended services there, perhaps on a regular basis. |
