I noticed on another link a map of 1936, and it shows a Triumph Gloria works sited just up from the Dunlop site on Holbrook Lane. I have done a little investigation and found that the General Manager was a "Claude Holbrook" 1886-1979. He joined the company in 1919, but there is no record of the factory in the history of Triumph as I have found. I also wonder if the name was used for the area or is it just a coincidence." Yet another snip of history waiting to be uncovered.

"Most of the TRIUMPH Gloria works off Holbrook Lane survives. It is the only factory remaining from the firm's days as an independent manufacturer, and was used to produce cars from 1935 until 1939 when the firm passed into receivership." This pic is public domain so no problems, This is what they made. Coventry car building at its BEST. But did Triumph use the Flying Standard in them days? (on the rad cap)

That Triumph Works photo is unbelievable. From what I can work out there are hardly any of the buildings in that image left. Probably just a little bit in Lower Ford Street.

I only remember the Triumph building, the rest around it was a bombed out waste land. Inside was a concrete staircase which led up to the roof. As a small child I would climb down the far side of the building from the roof. Looking at it now, I shudder to see how high it was.

Great picture NeilsYard. Goodness knows what year it was taken, and I haven't go a clue as to the names of the roads it shows or the imposing buildings in the background.

Centre left I recognise Priory Street baths, with Ford Street along the side.

It's a view from above the Cathedral spire looking north-east across Priory Street towards the junction of Ford Street and Cox Street.

I see it also shows the now missing "Perkins St". Great photo.

On the back of this thread I've just been reading up on the Works whilst obviously hard at work "Siegfried Bettmann - Triumph's founder died at his home "Elm Bank", Stoke Park" - apparently. So that's where the name comes from. My wife's been on several Council courses at Elm Bank. Anyone know where Siegfried was buried?

Siegfried Bettmann died on 23rd September 1951. An old acquaintance, Canon R.L. Donaldson of Ketton, Lincolnshire, conducted his funeral at Canley Crematorium. A good small book on his life is available at the Herbert bookshop, it's No.24 of the Coventry and County Heritage series 'The Triumph of Siegfried Bettmann' by Gordon Maycock.
