I can remember when the Sikh Temple was a private house, and can remember when it became the Sikh Temple. There used to be an apple and pear tree in the grounds of the Foleshill Social Club. I remember scrumping there once and the owners and customers of club came out and chased my mates away whilst I was stuck up the apple tree!!! The club used to have a bonfire around the back on Guy Fawkes Day. The club also had a youth club every Monday and they played topical records, this was before such an occasion was called "a disco". I remember one of the hits of the day they played was "At The Hop" by Danny and the Juniors!!! |

My wife Janet Blythe and I have been married 59 years today (St Laurence's, Old Church Road).
I believe you knew her, and her brother Barry. “School books” mean anything to you? Windmill Rd.
Now where did the name Pegasus come from that you mentioned?
Was the boy Derek Oldham, Aldermans Green Road, any relation? He landed up in the next street to us in Brighton in the eighties. His brother Billy was my mate from birth till fourteen, his sister and my sister likewise.
My young brother Geoff was at Windmill about 55-56 time. Lived at Canal House, New Inn Bridge. Jack Lanchbury (relative) lived at the big house in the orchard opposite Foleshill Club. |

I was told that there was tunnel somewhere at the back of the old canal house, which seemed a bit spooky at that time.
And can you remember if there was an old cottage on the other side of the canal back in the 40s-50s. And the little sweet shop "Cyril's" who had a daughter who used a wheelchair.
Just memories of times gone by. |

I never really lived at Canal House, New Inn Bridge. My parents moved there some time around 1957, my father was ordered to clean up the canal before they handed it to the new pleasure craft boats, and the pleasure craft people took over their old canal house at Brinklow.
The tunnel was at the side of the house, there was a garden gate at the side which led on to the cut, then the tunnel under the road - the inside of the tunnel was the inside of the bridge, the long garden then ran below but alongside the pavement to the shops.
The tunnel wasn't deep under, it was really the canal toolshed - pickaxe spades, ropes, hedge tools, spare boat hooks, etc.
Way back in 1935 till the war I attended Windmill Road School half a day every week for woodwork lessons, even when the Sowe was flooded in the park, or when the mill shut the water off and caused flooding, or when we had rain and Longford water ran down Hurst Road and into the park. We lived in AG Road then.
My wife Janet lived just inside Elmsdale Avenue. |
