I have a load of photos of the Coventry Motoring centenary celebrations in 1985 where the city centre was closed off and a circuit made around town. I'm sure there was a Broadspeed at that - will try to dig out. |

You only had to look at them, and they broke. It proved the folly of going racing with a car of not far from 2 tons; to get performance they had to be seriously 'souped up', and to get roadholding, the wheels/tyres had to be enlarged to the point where they overstressed everything. Broadspeed had a super reputation from racing Minis, but Jags - and even Dolomite Sprints - were a totally different ball game! A lot of people at Browns Lane believed that they could have done far better, but BL politics ruled, and they weren't allowed to get involved unless Ralph Broad agreed.
But an interesting bit of history, probably (best!) forgotten now, involving Browns Lane and Canley. Incidentally, I thought the Broadspeed Jags were broken up - but you may know different!! ![]() |
