Two pages from directories, 1957 & 1960, you will see on the 1957 page that Timothy Whites is not numbered, don't shoot *me*!

Very good, Heathite. That list really takes me back, my memory of those days is poor but going through that list I can visualize each shop and almost smell their aromas in passing.

My parents bought me a new racing bicycle from Halfords in Trinity Street in April 1957 as I was just starting work and sold it in 1963 when I had my first car.

Was I dreaming but wasn't Sutton & Jones situated next to Alice Middleton's? Probably not directly on Trinity St. though? You would know this Helen, being in ladies lingerie. Lol Lol Lol Lol

Lol I'm no expert on Coventry's shops old or new. I'm ashamed to say I am more of a fan of shopping for tech than undies. While I recognise that there is a need for both, I'm a most reluctant shopper. Lol Lol Lol However, despite being a teetotaller, I am now a semi expert on Coventry's old pubs, so maybe at some point I might make knickers my remit.

Sadly, the building I was referring to does not seem to appear on this list. The company I worked for hired this building to put on an exhibition for two or three weeks and I was involved in putting it together. The building was empty before and after that and was eventually demolished to make way for Sainsburys.

I used to hate wearing stockings as my legs are quite fat. Woolies were the first place that started to sell tights. They weren’t very pretty, either pink or blue nylon pants with legs attached. Soon though you could get all sorts of tights. Do you remember a little shop in the side of BHS facing Woolies that just sold loads of different sorts of tights?

In this photo by MR we see Fleet St from St John's to the turning into Holyhead Rd. The last shop on the right I remember was another one with young ladies repairing nylon stockings in the window. I had to pass it whenever I went to the Allesley (8) bus stop in Holyhead Rd to visit my grandparents in Coundon. Edited by member, 16th May 2020 11:45 am

I think the greengrocers was Blue Chain Stores. They were next to Boots. I remember Fare Value, one of the first self service grocers (supermarket to today's generation!). Sainsburys opened up in the city centre fairly soon after. Faines (?) was a stationer nearly opposite Blue Chain. Post copied from topic Earlsdon on 14th Jul 2020 7:42 pm
