That scene looking up New Buildings is a short distance to the left of the sketch in post 161. I've gained an appreciation for photos like that because they provide perspective for earlier sketches that might show better buildings but have an element of artistic inaccuracy. |

Would you see the spires in that angle from there?
Yes Kaga - (1937 map) - I think the photo is only just prior to the war.

Yes of course Neil is right, you can see the spires quite clearly, sorry about that. But I wasn't looking and thinking of the picture at the time, I was thinking history. New Buildings skirted the Priory pool and had many tall buildings - the armoury, the Golden Lion, etc and at the bottom where the tram stands were, the Smithfield, would have blocked out one of the spires. |

To go back to an earlier date, I said would you see the spires from Hales St, well you were correct in saying Yes, but in my younger days the thirtie's Hale St ended at Trinity st, from there it was known as the Hippodrome, the Fire station or Pool meadow, the hippodrome was new, so was Pool meadow, so was Trinity st
Officially it was Hale st, but no one called it such. |

Hales, as in John Hales. Green stripes at school. I was yellow stripes, Sherwyns. The first headmaster of the school, Thomas Sherwyn. So many of the grammar schools came into existence at that time because there were so many redundant clerics, whose skills were numeracy & literacy, being themselves well educated. They were not much use at anything else. |

On the south side, just broken, half buildings, possibly the corner shop, on the Burges corner saved because they had water from the Sherbourne - on the north side buildings got hit but repairable. Next to the Smithfield they built the temporary Continental Cafe, a few yards back from the road. |
